Assess by phone and can send a Designated Crisis Responder (DCR) or mobile team if someone is a danger to self/others or gravely disabled (can’t care for basic needs).
Step-by-step
  1. “My family member likely used fentanyl/cocaine, is confused, sometimes hallucinating, and can’t safely care for himself. We need a DCR evaluation.”
  2. Provide address, recent behaviors, and note that the hospital discharged him but impairment continues.
  3. Ask whether to transport to detox/ER or if a mobile team will come.

8 Safety and Harm Reduction

Naloxone (Narcan): Free or low-cost at many pharmacies and via WA DOH distribution programs. Keep naloxone on hand; if overdose is suspected, call 911 and administer naloxone.

Fentanyl Test Strips: Available via community programs and WA DOH to reduce accidental exposure risk.
